NIHPB offers a full range of HPB procedures from major liver and pancreatic resections to cutting edge modalities such as minimal access (laparoscopic, keyhole) surgery and robotic surgery. Each faculty member has a meritorious and illustrious career in hepato-biliary and pancreatic surgery and also has considerable experience in the most complicated of such surgeries like liver and pancreas transplantation.

Dr. A S Soin
Dr. A S Soin is a globally recognized surgeon for liver transplantation and has been awarded the Padma Shri for pioneering liver transplantation in India. An alumnus of AIIMS and Cambridge University where he mastered multi-organ transplantation and liver / biliary surgery, he has many surgical innovations to his credit. Dr. A S Soin and his team are credited with almost all the firsts in liver transplantation in India, including the first successful transplant in 1998. With more than 1,200 liver transplants, 7,500 other complex liver and biliary operations, 720 invited lectures, 105 research publications, 26 book chapters, and a book on Liver Transplantation to his credit, Dr. A S Soin is truly a world authority in the field.
Dr. Ravi MohankaDr. Ravi Mohanka is a Senior Consultant Hepato-biliary and multi-organ transplant surgeon and has experience in both adult and pediatric transplantation, including complex procedures such as multi-visceral transplantation. He has worked at the most reputed hospitals in India and abroad, including the prestigious University of Pittsburgh. He has presented and published his research work at many scientific meetings and international journals and also delivered faculty lectures in many meetings.
The growth of deceased organ donation in India will not only fill the void between the demand and availability of organs for transplantation, but also expand its scope to enable pancreas, intestinal, and multi-visceral transplantation, thus saving many more lives. As head of the Institute's deceased donor programme, he envisions deceased donor organ transplantation as the next big wave in transplantation. The team's endeavor is to bring about mass awareness and establish logistic support for safe recovery, equitable sharing and rapid transport of organs across the country. With this change, many donors could pass on the gift of life and numerous patients with end-stage organ failure could benefit with a life-saving transplant.
Dr. Rahul Kakodkar
Dr. Rahul Kakodkar is a Senior Consultant Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon at the Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine and heads its division of academics. He has considerable experience in the field of hepatobiliary surgery which also includes active participation in pioneering efforts that led to the growth of liver transplantation in India. Apart from his clinical credentials in the field of hepatobiliary surgery and living donor liver transplantation, he has served as faculty at national and international fora and has a number of international publications to his credit.
Dr Amit N. Rastogi
Dr Amit N. Rastogiis a Consultant Surgeon in the Institute, with a decade of experience in Surgical Gastroenterology, Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant surgery from various Institutes of repute in the country viz SGPGI (Lucknow), AIIMS, GB Pant, Apollo Hospitals and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.
Robotic Surgery for Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary would be the surgery of the future entailing less pain, scarring and early recovery. Dr.Amit is in-charge of developing the Robotic surgery programme at the Institute and has taken steps to setup this niche programme, the final aim being to carry out Robotic donor hepatectomies for LDLT.
Dr Sanjay Goja
Dr Sanjay Goja is a Consultant surgeon and has worked in the most reputed liver transplant centers in the country. He has been involved in teams credited with developing most of the innovative procedures in liver transplantation in India. After completing his training in Surgical Gastroenterology, he did his Fellowship in Liver Transplantation, his main interest being introduction of new measures to ensure donor safety in LDLT.
His other interests include promotion of the cadaver programme, cost reduction in transplant surgery to make it available to larger section of needy people in India and application of newer technology in Liver Transplantation. Apart from liver transplantation he has been doing lot of work in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery.
Dr.Balachandran Menon
Dr.Balachandran Menon completed his superspeciality training from the most advanced centres in the country - M.Ch Gastrointestinal Surgery (SGPGI) / PDCC Vascular Surgery (SCTIMST); and was trained in Liver transplantation at Samsung Hospital Seoul, Korea and Sir Gangaram Hospital, New-Delhi. He has over 10 years of experience in Surgical Gastroenterology and laparoscopic HPB surgery.
His career interests include resectional treatment of liver tumours, advanced laparoscopic HPB surgery and laparoscopic donor hepatectomy. His research areas of interest include – use of low GRWR grafts in LDLT and prevention of graft reperfusion injury.

- Four dedicated operation theaters equipped with the latest anaesthesia equipment and monitors to handle this complex procedure involving massive blood losses at times.
- Advanced haemodynamic monitoring systems like Lithium Dilution Cardiac Output (LIDCO), Pulse Contour Analysis (Vigileo ) and Swan Ganz Catheters
- Ultrasonography guided central venous access for precision and to minimize complications
- Point of care coagulation monitoring using Thromboelastography (TEG)
- Rapid Infusion devices - for infusing warmed blood / fluids at the rate of upto 1.5 L/minute
- Patient temperature control equipment - fluid warming devices, temperature control blankets and mattresses
- Autologous blood transfusion facility to minimize blood transfusion requirement.
- “Cell saver”, facility to collect and washing blood lost during surgery and re-transfusion to conserve blood
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) – dialysis facility for intraoperative and postoperative use in patients with renal dysfunction.
- Acute Pain Service – 24x7 by trained staff for providing post-operative pain relief using Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) 22- bedded ICU with demarcated 8 single bedded isolation cubicles for liver transplant patients with separate paramedical staff for each patient.

- ICU is equipped with in-house sonography, fibre optic bronchoscopy, renal replacement therapy, advanced hemodynamic monitoring and ventilatory support system.

Dr. Kaushal Madan
Dr. Sanjiv Saigal heads the Division of Transplant Hepatology and has spearheaded the medical team of the largest Liver Transplantation progamme in the country for over a decade. From the time of his INLAKS Fellowship at the Kings College Hospital in London, he has also been actively involved in academics and research with numerous publications in national and international peer reviewed journals. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), UK and Member of National
Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS).
Dr. Neeraj Saraf is a Senior Consultant, obtained his Fellowship in advanced Hepatology from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, USA, and is a UNOS certified liver transplant physician with vast experience in managing patients with liver diseases. His areas of expertise include management of patients with liver failure and transplant.
In addition to comprehensive pre-, peri- and post-transplantation care of patients, the Department of Transplant Hepatology provides other hepatology support services like endoscopy, liver biopsies and ERCP in elective and emergency situations. The unit has a large experience in managing transplant immunosuppression, post-transplant complications if any, and in dedicated follow-up care. The Division is also involved in various clinical and lab based research projects in Transplant Hepatology.
Dr. Neelam Mohan, Director of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Liver transplantation was trained in AIIMS and at Birmingham Children's Hospital, U.K. She heads the first of its kind dedicated pediatric hepatology and transplant service in the country which provides world class facilities for managing newborns, children and adolescents with liver disease. She is supported by a team of colleagues trained in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and intensive care.
Along with the surgical team, the unit is credited with several firsts in the field of liver transplant in India, such as the first successful reduced cadaveric liver transplant in a child, first successful liver transplant in a fulminant hepatic failure, first bloodless liver transplant, first swap liver transplantation. In addition, the team was involved in the first successful combined liver-kidney transplant from two live donors in a case of primary hyperoxaluria type –1 in South Asia, youngest domino liver transplantation in the world and the first liver transplant in a baby with factor VII deficiency in the world. The Department is governed under the guiding principle of providing affordable medical services to patients with care, compassion and commitment, the motto being "consider every child as our own".

Nutrition is a very vital component of post-operative recovery of patients who undergo complex HPB surgeries and our dedicated team of nutrition experts continually monitor the nutritional needs and cater to their requirements.
Physiotherapy team is trained and experienced in taking care of complex needs of patients who undergo complex liver, biliary and pancreatic surgeries.
Dressings and stoma care clinic is run by dedicated especially trained stoma care nurses.
